摘要：抽烟是个"evil"。但爱吸烟者虽也多承认吸烟是坏事，但却说吸烟是个"necessary evil"即"必要的坏事"；而嫌烟者则认为坏事就是坏事，都是不必要的--那有什么"necessary evil"可言。
--...he steered the car with the other hand, knocking the dottle(烟斗中吸剩的焦烟丝) out into the ashtray...
一手开车，一手磕(knock)烟斗，小心车祸呀。
--An old Squat woman...leans against a wall in the shade, smoking a pipe, stubbing the bowl with her thumb.
用拇指把烟袋锅子(the bowl)弄熄（stub）了。
--Horn lit a fresh cigarette from the butt of the first, then dropped the burning end and trod it...
把燃烧的烟屁股(burning end)扔(drop)到地上碾灭(tread)

把烟掐(crush)了。
--Tobbat joked as he ground out his cigarette in the ashtray。
把烟捻灭（ground out）了。
##--On the weed means to be smoking heavily. If you say a man is "really on the weed" you mean to smoke too excess.
烟抽的厉害(smoke heavily)用on the weed。
"To be on sth." means to be addicted to it. This phrase is popular with users of narcotics, they say "A is on heroin,吸毒成瘾" or "B is on the bottle,（酒鬼）" meaning they drink heavily.
A young man might say, "I'm back on weed again.（抽烟者经常说的话）" to mean he was smoking again after attempting to stop. Or a student could ask, "How long have you been on the weed?"
