1. Creatures having certain associated characteristics in one culture, but not in the other;
2. Creatures with certain associated qualities in both cultures, but with different qualities.

Under the first category we shall take as examples the bull(公牛), the beaver(河狸), the crane(仙鹤), the tortoise(乌龟).

To Chinese, the first two creatures carry no particular association. They are merely animals that may or may not be common, may or may not be useful. Chinese might be able to guess the meaning of a bull in a china shop, but they would not have the image that would be evoked in the minds of English-speaking people: an angry, snorting bull charging into a shop filled with exquisite fragile porcelain. Consequently, Chinese would be less appreciative of the vividness of the expression - meaning a person who is clumsy and bungling and causes a lot of trouble in a situation requiring tact and delicacy.

The beaver is chiefly a North American animal, not wildly know in China. Its constant activity, its habit of gnawing down trees and building complex "homes" and its skill and ingenuity in doing this have earned for the animal the name eager beaver(卖力的河狸). In metaphor, an eager beaver is a person who is anxious to get something done, works hard, and is somewhat impatient. The term sometimes has a slightly derogatory connotation.

Chinese symbolism that goes with tortoise or turtle is twofold. On the one hand is longevity. Stone tortoises symbolic of venerable old age can be seen in front of ancient halls, temples and places. On the other hand, the creature is also the symbol foot the cuckold(戴绿帽子的人). To call a person 王八 or 王八蛋 is highly insulting, highly profane. In western culture, there is no such association; the turtle is just a slow-moving and not very attractive creature. The English term turtle-neck sweater often brings a grimace to Chinese when they learn that such is the English name for the 翻领毛衣, they are wearing.

Under the second category let us consider the owl(猫头鹰), the bat(蝙蝠), the dog(狗), the tiger(虎), and the petrel(海燕).

As wise as an owl.

as blind as a bat
crazy as a bat
he's a bit batty
have bats in the belfry

Mention of the bat often evokes the image of an ugly, sinister, blood-sucking creature. This may possibly because of the vampire bat. The emotions aroused in English-speaking people are similar to those that the dreaded 夜猫子 arouses among Chinese: fright and revulsion.
