片语飞花之二十一：典故(Allusions) |

摘要：从片语飞花之二十到片语飞花之二十一，整整一年。一年的时间，足以发生任何事。
MM们依然是绿鬓朱颜，GG们不知道有没有戴上帽子，万千新闻组经历了一场话语权的洗礼，终于重开了。我不清楚有多少人知道万千和新帆的渊源。一年前我曾经赞扬过的万千新闻组的原幽默组版主，终于任何人都很难抵御的诱惑下，背叛了自己的诺言。
博学如钱钟书的SILVERWIND开始迷恋游戏并热衷于潜水，婚了的ROWENA开始贴信箱里的广告玩起了商品英语，TICO借口自己的OE老坏学银风的样子偶尔出来喘口气，JULIAN更是不见了踪影……至于我自己，继续在北京肮脏的天空下奔波，不管怎么样，片语飞花又始继续写下去了。
In most, if not all, languages, people embellish their speech or writing with references to characters or events from their history, legends, literature, religion, etc. Such references – allusions – not only make the language richer, but also make communication much more vivid and often easier. 运用典故不仅以润饰语言，使之丰富多彩，生动清晰，而且使人们更易于沟通思想。
In Chinese, “你这个人真阿Q” or “她是个林黛玉式的人物” conveys so much information that hardly any further explanations needs to be made. And now expressive of the speaker’s feelings are remarks like “原来是个空城计” and “真没意思，让我们来跑龙套”.
Speech and writing in both English and Chinese abound with allusions, a reflection of the rich cultural heritage of the people who speak the languages. But such allusions are not always easy to understand, and without understanding there can be little appreciation.
Many English allusions involve events or characters from the treasure house of English literature, exp. from Shakespeare. Native speakers of English quote him everyday, often, without realizing they are doing so. Although his plays were written over three hundred years ago, many lines from his plays are cited commonly in everyday English (但他的剧本中的许多台词流传至今，有些话已经成了日常英语口语的一部分。):
Forgive and forge 不念旧恶，不记仇
That’s all Greek to me 我对此一窍不通
All’s well that ends well 结果好就一切都好
All is not gold that glitters 发亮的东西不一定都是金子 － 好看的东西不一定都有用
Discretion if the better part of valor 小心即大勇；考虑周到剩过勇敢 ― 此语常作为胆怯者解嘲的借口
There is a story about an elderly Englishman who had never seen a play by Shakespeare. He was invited to see Hamlet. “Well, what did you think of it?” he was asked afterwards. He shook his head. “Just a lot of quotations put together,” he replies. It never occurred to him that “those quotations” came from that very play Hamlet, and that Shakespeare himself was the author of those sayings. Shakespeare’s insight into human beings, his sensitivity to the problem of state, and his genius with words have left an everlasting mark on the English language and on the thinking of English speaking people all over the world.
来几个例子作为结束：
a Cleopatra: a woman of breathtaking beauty.
克利欧佩特拉：此人为古埃及艳后，意为绝代佳人。
a Shylock: a cruel, greedy, money-grabbing person, one who will go to no ends to acquire wealth.
夏洛克：守财奴，这个不用解释了，上过学的同志都知道吧。
