Women in the Modern WorldQ
Women are playing an increasingly important role in society today. The past decades have seen quite a number of successful women active in arts, science, business, and politics. Artistically, Virginia Woolf was an eminent writer who made original contribution to form of the novel, stressing psychological minutiae. Scientifically, Ms. Curie was twice awarded the Nobel Prize for her remarkable contribution to the discovery of radium which later proved extremely useful for medical science. Professionally, HP is now headed by a female CEO named Carly Fiorina, who has successfully merged COMPAQ and made HP the most suitable company for working mothers. Politically, Ms. Margaret Thatcher was the British Prime Minister who was known for her unflinching courage and nerve for advocating privatization of major public sectors, thus getting herself a nickname, the Iron Lady. These distinguished women are a case in point demonstrating marked achievements by women. S(Zu
With the change in their social role, women’s position in family has been improved as well. In the 20s of the last century the bread winner was synonymous with the father, who was in full command of the other family members, and the mother had to be restricted to going about the household chores and nursing the young. This absolute male dominance within family has lost ground to familially sexual equality that started to emerge during the 60s and shortly afterwards surged into unprecedented feminist movements across the Atlantic. Now it’s not uncommon that the father does shopping and cooking and the mother earns bread and butter in the working world. The spirit of equality has resulted in sharing of responsibilities.wPj^qo
In spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been completely realized. In the Islamic world, for instance Iran, women are still suppressed, deprived of free expression of their unique souls. They have to wear thick veils, however hot the weather may be, simply intended to protect their purity and to symbolize their monogamous relationships with their husbands. And in some parts of the world a man is lawfully allowed to marry more than a woman as his spouses. This polygamy was an intense indicator of women’s inferiority to men. The culture factors put aside, the claim that society in the developed world has reached full sexual equality is an overstatement. One can occasionally see on TV proud conceited men who treat their wife as another piece of their possessions and beat her if she would be a bit disobedient to his orders.OZ9B

To summarize, there’s been a significant rise in women’s status in the modern world, although the society remains to be mainly male dominated. But much remains to be done to fully achieve absolute sexual equality.*Rk@rc

You can walk to the reading rooms to catch up with the latest in the press, as the reading rooms hold the newest publications and newspapers, and a number of hot-seller books. You can also borrow and take out books from the stack rooms, which keep an enormous collection of books and back copies of magazines or newspapers. You’d “check out” the books at the loan desk with your card. In fact this loan service is what most people use their library cards for. When the loan period--normally three weeks--expires, you can renew the books once and once only. If you find part of the books interesting enough and you feel like having it stay permanent with you, you can have the pages photocopied in the Xerox rooms at a small charge. F
