Anita Baker
Quiet Storm soul vocalist Anita
Baker was born in Detroit, Mich. in 1957 and began her musical career
with the soul band Chapter 8, joining the group in the mid-'70s in
time to record on their eponymous 1979 debut. After its release
Baker began a solo career, issuing her gospel-influenced debut
album,The Songstress, in 1983 on the small Beverly Glen label.
The album was not widely released and Baker returned to her secretarial
job, continuing to pursue her singing on the side. With the release
of her hit 1986 major-label debut Rapture Baker became one
of the most popular "urban contemporary" performers in the country,
selling millions of albums. After the release of the popular R&B-influenced
album Compositions in 1990, Baker returned with 1994's hit
Rhythm of Love.
