Crosby, Stills and Nash
The classic rock
group Crosby, Stills and Nash was formed in California in 1968 by
former Hollies member Graham Nash (guitar), ex-Buffalo Springfield
member Stephen Stills (guitar/keyboards/bass) and former Byrds guitarist
David Crosby. The group released their self-titled debut album the
following summer, adding singer-songwriter Neil Young (also of Buffalo
Springfield) shortly thereafter, just in time to appear at Woodstock,
Altamont, Big Sur and other stops on their support tour. Crosby, Stills
and Nash quickly became one of the most popular and influential
American rock bands, their vocal harmonies and varied style
-- which ranged from folk to hard rock -- won over fans and earned
a Grammy for Best New Artist. Despite internal tensions, the now four-man
group recorded Deja Vu in 1970; less acoustic than its
predecessor, the record became an instant No. 1, double platinum hit.
Unfortunately the quartet broke apart due to personal conflicts not
long after its release, leaving behind only the No. 1 live release
4 Way Street, featuring singles "Teach Your Children," "Southern
Man," and "Ohio." Each member went on to a solo career.

In 1974 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young re-formed for a summer tour
-- the first stadium tour in music history -- to support their new
compilation album So Far, another No. 1 hit. Following
another hiatus the group returned, without Young, in 1977
to support the new album CSN, followed in 1982 by Daylight
Again. After another period of turmoil the group re-formed
in 1988, this time with Neil Young, to record American Dream,
followed by 1990's Live It Up and 1994's After the Storm.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash continue to tour; for his part, Neil Young
enjoyed a career resurgence in the 1990s, performing with
groups such as Pearl Jam.
