Joe Simon
Joe Simon became famous in
the early '60s for his husky baritone and his ability
to effortlessly combine two extremely disparate styles: R&B and
country-rock. Simon began his career in the Bay Area on the Vee-Jay
label and later moved to Nashville where he fine-tuned his country-oriented
material for the Sound Stage 7 label. Simon had a slew of No.
1 hits through the '60s and '70s and coined a style all his own with
"Nine Pound Steel" and "The Chokin' Kind." When 1975 came around,
Simon released a couple of disco hits, setting that slick, sexy disco
funk in motion for the rest of that decade. "Get Down, Get Down" and
"Music in My Bones" became huge dance hits.
